Intrepid 4x5 Hardwood £500.00

The premium Intrepid 4x5 Hardwood is available in: Cherry, Walnut or Mahogany with hand-folded black bellows.

The Hardwood 4x5 retains all the tried and tested features of the 4x5 MK4 and Black Edition. The base and front standard supports are anodised aluminium for increased stability and the bellows our signature water-resistant Nylon.

The rear standard can be rotated 360° for fast changing of orientation, with magnets to ensure it locks properly into either portrait or landscape. As with all Intrepid field cameras the Hardwood 4x5 is super compact and lightweight at just 1.2kg.

The camera also features our innovative and super precise rear controlled focus system. As well as dual front standard controls so you can use the front rise/fall and tilt movements fully independently.

Cherry - warm golden brown with straight fine grain (the lightest colour of the three woods)

Mahogany - deep reddish dark brown with detailed straight and ring grain

Walnut - cool dark brown with soft, largely straight grain detail

The wood is sealed and varnished prior to assembly to ensure the finish is even and smooth. Each camera is cut from a single piece of wood, then sanded and varnished by hand. The individual grain of each piece of wood means that every Hardwood 4x5 will be totally unique. The base and supporting parts of the camera are made from high grade aluminium that is hard coat anodised black.

Each camera comes fitted with bright Intrepid ground glass featuring a half-inch grid and Intrepid Fresnel screen. Our focusing mechanism runs on linear metal guides for frictionless, precise focus that locks as soon as you stop turning. The ground glass frame and front and rear standard controls are 3D printed from high-quality, sustainable PLA. Our signature Intrepid bellows are water resistant on the outside with a triple layered light resistant lining, all hand-folded in our workshop.

Manufactured and hand-assembled in Brighton, UK.

As with all Intrepid Cameras the Hardwood 4x5 is built for versatility and that includes the films you can shoot with it. It produces breathtaking results with colour slide, colour negative or black and white 4x5 film. If you are unsure: Colour Negative film generally gives softer tones and has a more dynamic range and ISO speeds. Comparatively Colour Slide film is renowned for its vivid colours and fine grain but is slightly less forgiving when it comes to exposure. These are readily available from all the big film manufacturers along with Black and White 4x5 film. Check out the ‘Film’ section on our site.

Our 4x5 cameras have a ‘Graflok back’ (or international back), which simply means the glass can be removed in order to mount a range of different film backs and accessories. This allows you to use medium format (120) film in all formats from 6x6 to 6x17, and instant film like Fuji-FP 100C, expired Polaroid 45 film or Fuji Instax Wide with the LomoGraflok back.

In addition to these you can also use the Intrepid for traditional Collodion Wet Plates / Tin Types, either by adapting regular film holders or with purpose made holders. We’ve got a great guide on our blog to getting started with Collodion.

The Intrepid is a ‘bring your own’ lens camera, but thankfully large format lenses are readily available secondhand. All our 4x5 cameras will work with pretty much any 90mm-300mm lens mounted on one of our lens boards or most Linhof / Technika style boards (96mm x 99mm.) You can use some 75mm lenses but they will require a recessed lens board. For more in-depth advice on choosing your first lens, or getting your head around lens boards and shutters, check out our ‘Lens buying Guide’. If you don't feel ready to commit to a lens just yet, why not start out with one of our great pinhole lenses for a fraction of the cost of glass! They are great to experiment with and to help get the feel for the camera.
